John McCain beat Bush's support among the religious right in South Carolina by a substantial margin. You know, after being smeared by having a black baby. The early assassination attempts were totally clown shoes though. I give him 3 years. The only people competent enough to get it done are going to be guys who don't want to spoil mid-term elections.
Now think of all of the guns in this country, Frank.
Hate to say it, but Obama is going down.

I call helicopter crash - they have a statistically improbable right-wing bias.
"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

Racism and religious bigotry in this country.Let me play PARANOIA too: more importantly, what makes you assume that the competent guys won't fail on purpose?
Let's face it. Probably 10% of this country truly believes that Obama is a secret Muslim. Probably more than that. I'd say at least a fifth seriously can't deal with the fact that a black man is running the government. I'd say that none of these people will have a problem getting guns and bombs.
These people don't go away by a handwave. The Secret Service may have stepped up their game (based on what?) but these fuckers are like termites. <200 days. Dead fucking serious.

Honestly, I'm not willing to rule anything out.
A dedicated enough person could pull off something destructive like that if they're willing to make it a suicide mission.
Hopefully the fact that Obama will help the people that supported McCain more than McCain would have helped them will blunt the chance of an attack like that happening.

Lago, I asked that to them, not you. What I actually meant was to pay homage to your new username, as my post was paranoid too.

Oh, for fucks sake, man. That never helps.Hopefully the fact that Obama will help the people that supported McCain more than McCain would have helped them will blunt the chance of an attack like that happening.
Look at what Clinton did for this country even though he had a losing hand. Do you think that mattered to the Jesusfucks? And he was one of them! One of their own, man, and look what got piled on top of him. And Obama is NOT one of them or even a Murican in their eyes.
So imagine their evel of hatred after 1 or 2 years, after the corporatist media stirs its simpering doublethinking sheep into a frenzy. Now they have even more reason to hate Obama.
But I wouldn't give them that long to percolate the necessary hatred. This is the USA. 200 days starting today.
My mistake.Lago, I asked that to them, not you. What I actually meant was to pay homage to your new username, as my post was paranoid too

I will grant that the primary reason that American politics are so fucked is that the people of my home country seriously are that parochial and ignorant. The poorest people in our country are the most adamantly against "socialism" even though it's straight up an ideology that exactly dovetails with their self interest. These people might give you a tirade about how such policies punish "success" (despite the fact that their own personal success will never happen unless and until they are willing to start taking advantage of methods of improving their position); but you know they might just give you an even less informed rant about how socialism is against the teachings of Jesus (which they have therefore apparently never actually read).
People don't know what the Progress and Development Party stands for, they don't know what the Baathists believe. The fact that they are blithely repeating Peronist propaganda as if it were gospel truths doesn't bother them, and wouldn't even if they knew they were doing that because they have no idea who Peron was or what supporting him means. With no exposure to any political thought aside from "Us vs. Them" they seriously have no concept of what they are fighting for or why.
But while that does create a virtually limitless army of fanatics, it isn't an army that is particularly dangerous to the President of the United States. Sure, the people of Christian Exodus are no less dangerous than the Taliban on a man for man basis - but that's the point: the Taliban doesn't know how to do anything to a man in Washington and neither do they. When your entire strength comes from a fanatical certainty that refuses input from the outside it's actually very difficult to project force. The majority of the most dangerous people in the Christian Reich have literally never been more than 30 kilometers from their home - and they aren't likely to change that pattern just because their current favorite hate target happens to be President of the USA.
Recall, these assholes have been trying to kill Hugo Chavez for nearly a decade - and they have been explicitly aided in this project by the actual President of the USA. It's really not been going well, because these people really suck.

The arrogant, willfully ignorant hypocrisy of these fucknuts just enrages me. Not surprises, oh lord no, but it's just gotten too much to bear.Alaska -- Socialist dream-state or Libertarian paradise? "Take my 'oil check'. Please!"
Alaska is the biggest welfare state in the country, getting 1.50 dollars into the state for every 1.00 dollar that flows out.
A convicted bribe-taking felon who is GOING TO FUCKING JAIL actually wins his Senate election? Who the fuck cares, gives us our fuckin oil checks while we bitch about big government! We needs teh precious!

I am an optimist. I do not think there are many homicidally competent crazies out there. If there were, there would be significant terrorist attacks all day every day. It's not hard to build bombs and do crazy stuff.
If anyone is stupidly crazy enough to want to kill the best thing to happen to us in a long while, then they're probably also too crazy stupid to pull it off.
I am displeased that the republican campaign consisted mainly of trying to find these crazy people and stir them up into a homicidal frenzy, but hopefully some of them will listen to Mccain as he tries to calm them down.

He is going to get kicked out of the Senate, as agreed upon by both parties, and Palin will name his replacement. Alaskans are voting for whoever Palin selects, not for Stevens himself. Of course, the people who voted for him prefer Palin's choice, even unknown, to the Democrat challenging him.lago wrote:A convicted bribe-taking felon who is GOING TO FUCKING JAIL actually wins his Senate election? edit: looks like there is not a formal agreement to expel him, but the senator heading the National Republican Campaign Committee thinks he will be. There would also be a later election for a replacement.

That's the thing. They've really doubled down on preventative measures. No more riding in convertibles with the top down. No more walking down the street in the inauguration parade. When you consider that all the successful presidential assassins in history have taken advantage of stupid security lapses like going to the theater and sitting in the box without bodyguards, caution decreases the odds in and of itself.Crissa wrote:Even last night there was two-inch thick glass around Obama's speaking position where there were buildings overlooking it from a half-mile away. The glass was invisible except from an oblique angle, as well.
That's how good the Secret Service is today.

And as Frank points out, the people who really hate Obama are mostly really stupid. Quite a few of them might dress in camoflauge and think they're super commandos, but they're just not that good.

Or... they could dress like a tourist with a powerful belt bomb.
Suicide missions are fortunately not a part of Western cultural values, so that's an unlikely event.
